SlumDog Millionaire - A review..

Cast:Dev Patel, Freida Pinto,Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan, Madhur Mittal, Imran Hasnee, Mahesh Manjrekar.
Direction:Danny Boyle
Music:A R Rahman

Its been a long long time since I blogged on something. To be precise, its been 112 days since I blogged over here. So, finally, decided to break the shackles by posting a review on the latest much hyped movie SlumDog Millionaire.

The movie has already driven a really huge fan following after it won four Golden Globe awards this year. AR Rahman made us proud by winning the Golden Globe award for the best original score. The movie has been doing well in the box office and already it has been nominated for many awards for the Oscar 2009.

The movie basically is nothing but a 120 minute long film on all the negatives in India. The director Danny Boyle has shown the World about the black spot in India. Although there are many countries which are even more downtrodden when compared to India, Danny has chosen India just because here is the place where you can do anything and everything. You can mock at Indians and abuse Indians and we Indians never really care about those stuff. It is a real shame that the Indians, after watching the movie, are appreciating it but not thinking about why our country is like this. I have seen a dozen reviews which hail this as a great movie but the title in itself says what people in other part of the World think about our country.

The movie is basically about a guy from a slum area in Aamchi Mumbai who participates in the "Who wants to be a millionaire" show and wins the 20million rupees. Mainly focussed on showing the sufferings and sorrow of the people in the OTHER part of our country, this movie also shows about the destiny of the lovers who are separated in their childhood. But, as the director has showed in this movie, a person in a slum needn't be a "Know Nothing" fellow. And definitely he needn't be compared to a Dog. In fact, the world's most intelligent people hail from this amazing country called India and it is one fact that the director should be reminded of. I appreciate Danny Boyle's idea in portraying the miseries faced by slum-dwellers. But, I would have even more appreciated if he did something good for the betterment of the slum dwellers instead of minting money which he has generated through this movie.

In a particular scene where Jamal has to answer the 1 million rupees question, the host Prem(Anil Kapoor) suggests the wrong answer to Jamal during the break. It is later shown that he did that because he wanted to be the Hero of the show and that is why he gave the wrong answer to Jamal. I mean no host would have such an attitude and jealosy towards a guy winning a million rupees. Mr.Danny Boyle!! You have exaggerated a lot in this movie and still you are able to generate the revenue you wanted!! Thats the Generous India for you!! Jai Ho!!!

Bottomline: SlumDog Millionaire - An attempt to portray the OTHER part of India in the worst possible way!!

Rating : 7/10.

I dont think there is anything wrong with this movie. The story by Vikas Swarup demands the movie to be taken in such locations of India which is filled with dirt and filth. Mind you, no set was used for the scenes in the slums. Everything has been shown as it is. Being original is not a mistake.Unmaiya sonna sila paerku kasakka dhaan seyyum. Jamal cant be shown to be living in a deluxe apartment. It spoils the theme of the movie. The movie has been such a big success because everything seen on screen is real and unadultrated Some people say that the shithole scene is highly exaggerated. If we were in such a situation, we wont be daring to do any such thing. Because we are from different class of the society and we value our position in the society. But compared to ourselves, what does a 5 or 7 year old boy living in one of the most downtrodden places in the world have? No money, no social respect, no nothing. So i
dont see whats wrong with that scene. Such a scene comes in the movie Schindler's List, one of the very best movies ever created. If you see that scene, you will know that under such a situation, such a small boy wont be ashamed of anything. If you want to blame someone for this movie, it is not Danny Boyle, but Vikas Swarup who has written the book that way. I feel that nothing has been exaggerated in this movie and everything has been shown as it is. A slum boy winning 20 Millions may be a fairy tale, but that was the movie is all about. This movie has been beautifully portrayed and well directed. Most of all, "The
Mozart of Madras" has done a fantastic job. The climax is not much of a tear-jerker, but it was close enough. To conclude, except for the thing that this is a fairy tale, everything looks so real and original.

yet to see the movie.. so comments on movie after watching it.. but a nice write-up about Slumdog Millionaire

@mama
All the things which u said were correct. But, I go with vijay because he has humiliated the whole India by naming it a slum dog. Next, a slum boy winning 20 million rupees is not a fairy tale. The questions which were asked to him were thereal incidents which happened to him. For example in that shit hole scene he will jump into it to watch the shooting of the movie. The name of the movie and the actor's name will be asked. So this is how he will win that 20 million. All the questions shooted at him will make him remember some incident of his past. It is just a co incidence and sheer luck which made him win. The logic in that was perfect. Therefore, it is not a "FAIRY TALE" Mr Guhan.

first of all a nice write up..havn seen the movie yet so cant comment abt the story..only thing is tat u havn mentioned anythin abt our very own ARR music..i don know how this simple story made it to oscars..i don see anythin interestin in this film..i just want ARR to win the oscar..tats enuf for we Indians!!!

vinod said...

I don't think its that good to be nominated for Oscar. The music is also not as good as Lagaan. I guess the competition is not that tough this time for Oscar. The movie is good but not excellent.

i don't feel there is something wrong in this..and you know one thing.. jamal and the other girl kid are now in municipal english school joined by danny..he has just protrayed whats true..its time to think and be ashamed of ourselves..its because every citizens inability towards the situation..Danny made us think on this..and we need to be thankful..thats what i feel..now its our time to act on this..

Mahesh said...

I think you concentrated this review on the outline and the storyline alone and i cannot take this as a complete movie review. Kudos to ARR - accepted!
Exaggerations - denied
And your views about we Indians- Never can be accepted. You can see lots of NGO which are coming out to make the nation better. And all are youngsters of our age.
You can take up the responsibility of cleaning the dirts in the nation and just not keep talking that indians won't respond and other stuff.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie

@ guhan
The movie was based on the book Q & A by Vikas Swarup. And he never called the people as a dog. It was Danny Boyle who came up with this amazing title and definitely the movie has more than what the book offers.

ViJaY said...

@ mahesh
There are also certain NGOs which are money-minded. U saw it in the movie right?? About an orphanage. There may be many orphanages which run like that. But, if you are going to say that no orphanage is like dat, then obviously, Danny has exaggerated. And Danny and his team must have earned a lot of revenue through this movie. If he spends them in removing all the slums of Dharavi and gives them a life to live on, then you can say this movie is for the betterment of the nation. If not, then stop hailing about this movie!!

ViJaY said...

@mahesh
And I would still say that Indians won't respond to such things. Remember the Lok Parithran which participated in the elections and lost out miserably. A group of youngsters cannot do anything against the wicked politicians. So, the slums would be there forever!! You can't deny that.

Sadhana.S said...

hi! good review..i happen to have watched the film..an personally i dint like it..not cuz of the -ves shown but simply cuz it wasn't a movie material at all. could have been a documentary..an i think the reason it's highly praised in the west is cuz they have seen in awe that how come we Indians amidst so many problems seem to be happier than they are!!!

Hypocrisy, as one can see. Do not pass the buck, Mr. Blogger. Spouting simplistic opinions is no good. ARR deserves an award, agreed, totally. This is wtfically judgmental otherwise. :)
